The Nature Preserve is a part of the Freeport Community Park System and is managed by the Freeport Park District. It comprises three separate areas – the Walnut Valley, the Trail Valley, and the Prairie Valley. The Walnut Valley is a mixed-use natural area bordered by the Galena River and Walnut Creek. This area is especially important as a habitat for beaver and muskrat, as well as for its numerous plants, including the endangered prairie white-fringed orchid, amongst many other species of native vegetation. The Trail Valley area is composed mainly of forested terrain and is home to various birds, including hawks, owls, and woodpeckers.
